Am 12.05.1820 erblickte Florence Nightingale das Licht der Welt. Sie war eine Reformerin, eine Kämpferin der modernen Pflege. Ihr zu Ehren wird jährlich der Internationale Tag der Pflegenden (International Nurses Day) ausgerufen und um ein Zeichen für gute Pflege zu setzen.
Der internationale Tag der Pflegenden wurde 1965 vom International Council of Nurses (kurz ICN, Weltverband der Pflegenden) ins Leben gerufen und wird seit 1967 auch in Deutschland begangen. Im Januar 1974 wurde der Tag der Pflegenden schließlich offiziell zu einem Internationalen Aktionstag erklärt.
